Church Council Records 1958-1970.

This series comprises primarily correspondence retained by the Rev. Fredrik A. Schiotz, president of The American Lutheran Church (TALC) from 1960-1971, between Rev. Schiotz and members of TALC's Church Council and correspondence to the council from TALC members and other interested persons or organizations. Records in the series date from 1958-1970. Those records dating prior to the formation of TALC were kept in this series for continuity purposes. In addition to the bulk of records that is correspondence, there are also printed reports, studies, minutes, and mail ballots. Correspondence is handwritten or typewritten and includes among its subject matter, the relationship of districts to the church-at-large, ordination of women, faith healing, applications to the TALC clergy roster, privilege of the confessional, Canadian church autonomy, funeral practices, divorce, and Mormonism.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Representatives from each of the constitutent churches formed the Joint Union Committee in 1950 to effect the merger. Presidents of the constituent bodies at the merger were Henry F.
